A few historical primality test will be first reviewed. In 1644 a French monk Marin Mersenne stated a list of a certain type of numbers, later named Mersenne numbers, to be prime. Mersenne made a few mistakes, but the truthfulness was nevertheless beyond his era. In late 1870's Lucas published a theorem which can effectively check whether a Mersenne number is prime, and later Lehmer made this into a simple test about 1930. In the computer age this test has been encoded into a program, and a joint project over the internet has been established since 1996. The mathematical basics on this account will be covered in this talk.
